Social inequalities in health among old population in Bulgaria

Mariana Mourgova, University of National and World Economy

The aim of our study is to examine social differences in health status in Bulgaria among old and elderly men and women. The data we use are from the National Health Status Survey, conducted in 2001 along with the population Census. Previous research on heath status of Bulgarian population showed significant differences in healthy life expectancy by sex and social status. Differences between men and women, however, disappear with age and at older ages almost no differences were observed. Nevertheless, considerable differences in health by different social and ethnic groups for both sexes still remain.
