Intergenerational conflict and challenges in patterns of relocation of the elderly

The study examined the conflict issues and challenges faced in relocating elderly parents to join the family of an adult son. The study covered 947 Nigerian elderly parents (60 years and above) who are currently living with or had lived with an adult son and his family. The study found out that elderly women were more likely to report conflicts with the family of the adult son than elderly men. Accessibility to household resources like food, income and other resources were major causes of such rifts. Other remote causes were also identified. The paper conclude that such traditional living arrangement needs a thorough investigation and policy response.
