A comparative study on contraception use in Tehran,Iran

In the second half of the 20th century, with the emergence of oral pills and development of contraceptive device, an important revolution regarding birth control occurred in the world. The objectives of the present study are as follows: Studying the effective factors on contraceptive method choice. Comparing two districts of Tehran (North and South). The research method is field survey. The population consists of 82888 women aged from 15-49 years old in the two districts. The sample size is estimated to be 385, the subject were randomly selected, 200 from south and 185 from north. The obtained results indicate that 12.1% of the subject use tubectomy, 4.9% use vasectomy, 16.9%use oral pills, 20.5% use IUD, 15.8% use condom and 25.2% use coitus interruptus, 3.4% use rythm and 5% use other ways such as Norplant and injectable. The use of coitus interruptus in district north occurs more frequently than south district but Condom is used more in south district than north. Comparing the two districts concerning factors affecting the contraceptive method choice indicates that there is a significant difference between theses factors in two districts. The result also show that there is a significant relationship among variables such as number of children, judgment of the method, schooling, employment, health care costs, consent of method, the purpose of contraception and using Tubectomy. Variables such as husbands' education, the goal of contraception, consent of method and the district of residence have an impact of Vasectomy. Women in the two districts consider Vasectomy as the best method, judging Tubectomy, Oral pills, IUD, Coitus Interruptus, Condom, Rhythm, Norplant and Injectables to occupy the next ranks.
